RE: Want to impress newbies

Well we are back, was a good camp out, but most of the newbies didn't show up:( One family went to a different State Park, but anyway, we had a big breakfast Sat morning, Did campfire eggs instead of omelettes and sausage and apples were awsome. We baked biscuits in the dutch oven. For supper we had roasts with potatoes and carrots. Everyone loved them, even had the camp host stop to see what we were cooking. It all went well, but we ended up with alot of left overs, would of been great if you guys had dropped in. LOL maybe next time. Make Memories Julie

RE: Want to impress newbies

CampKrazy, that is an awsome idea. We call those Frito Pie here (made with frito's instead of doritos) and they are big sellers at the Frosty Freeze type drive inns. Never thought about doing them camping. Will try that. Thank you all for your ideas, the ones we can't try this trip, we certainly will add the the notebook for future use. The foil dinners, way back in the olden' days when I was in Girl Scouts we called that Hobo Stew, by any name it really can't be beat. Thanks for the reminder, I will be in touch to let you know how it turned out. Make Memories Julie

RE: what's your favorite camping dinner??

Man this was a good thread. On my "bucket list" (something to do before I kick the bucket) Is to have a clam bake on the beach in Maine. Since I was a little girl reading Trixie Belden mysteries, it has been my goal. Now I guess I will add lobster. Guess I better get busy if I am going to make it,. Thanks for sharing

RE: Removing Bathroom

We camped for many years in a 1988 Jayco, with no toilet or shower. We never used the sink either. We always do dishes on the tailgate of the truck in dish pans. We just bought a 2008 Jayco and we definately wanted it without a shower/toilet to us just a waste of space. We have a porta potty to use at night (Luggable Loo from Cabela's) We have used the sink in this one, which is much bigger. We still have not done a meals worth of dishes, but it is handy to have. We sold our old one to a friend for $300 and he took out the fridge and cabinets, and then sold it again...not sure how much he got for it. Anyway, do what works for you and yours and don't worrry about what others think. Some prospective buyers (particularly of much older models) would relish the creativity of mods. RE: 1st trip with toddler and PUP

We take the grandkids almost every trip, and they love it. Youngest is 2 1/2 and oldest is 15 (the teens are the hardest to occupy) But when the middle ones were 2& 3 we bought little plastic fishing poles at Wal Mart for 88 cents, they had a magnet on the hook end and a screw in the nose of the fish,. Those two spent HOURS with a bucket of water, catching fish. It was such a lovely site. They all love campin' with PaPa and Grammy

Want to impress newbies

Hi, we are going to be camping next weekend with 3 families who are relatively new to camping, certainly new to creative camp cooking, so my sister in law and I are trying to think of meals that will "wow" them. We are just going to be gone over the weekend so Friday night will be quick, probably hot dogs, and/or pie iron sandwhiches. Then Sat morning we hope to make zip lock omelettes, sausage and apples and biscuits baked in dutch oven. For Sat night supper, I am going to make pot roasts with potatoes and carrotts in cast iron roaster over the campfire, and probably a cherry cobbler in a dutch oven. The other meals will be up to the novices, probably lite meals since the big ones will keep us all pretty full. Can anyone think of anything else that might impress the newbies and help them catch the camping fever?

RE: first trip out - what was on your "bring next time" list?

My DH always complains that we haul sooooooooo much stuff, but I have challenged him to tell me what we haven't used? He can't do it, well we don't use everything on every trip, but is better to have it and not need it. Our trips vary so much, amount of people, distance, length of stay that we are pretty well prepared for anything. Not that we don't make at least one trip to the local Wal Mart....lol..And I love the acrylic Margarita glasses:)

RE: Crockpot Chocolate Pudding Cake

This is quite like a pudding cake recipe we use to have as a special treat when the budget was tight. Is funny how some of the simplest things endure. I believe my original recipe had brown sugar and I know it was with flour and baking powder instead of bisquick. Anyway, it can be done in a regular oven too, and should double or triple without a problem. I can't wait to try it in the crock pot though, I love things that can be made ahead. Thanks for sharing

RE: critters

We have alot of racoons around here, and they are crafty little guys. They can open the latch on a cooler...have lost several meals to them. One night, we had carefully put away everything edible but one of the kids left a piece of bubble gum on the picnic table, next to a plastic bottle of charcoal starter. The next morning there was an empty gum wrapper, and the bottle had teeth marks through it!! We just knew there was a plugged up, explosive racoon somewhere around.

RE: 16 oz Propane Fuel Bottle - full - can't use

Hmmm well the empty ones we do put in the trash...never really thought of it. I am glad the firedepartment helped you out. We have a solid waste recycling, who does "hazardous household chemical recycling" a couple of times a year. Also, here in the "boonies" I would have probably taken it to the propane place, they know what to do with that stuff. The rethreading idea caused me to cringe....lets see, metal against metal on a propane tank...duh???

RE: Camping lights/Decor!!!!!!

I know this is a silly question, but what is the significance of the pink flamingos? I know there is a story about them, a few years ago a sorority in town was putting them in peoples yards and others were stealing them...lol But I would love to do something like that when camping, if I knew the story behind it:)

RE: Refrigerator odor

Another trick for fridge or freezer or cooler that is being stored. Once it is completely dry inside, put crumpled newspaper in it until time to use it again. Keeps the dragon breath from building up.

RE: What are your best tips and tricks while camping?

Ok, for the soap and shower stuff, we have a 3 gallon bucket with lid, (this one use to hold kitty litter) and its the Beauty Bucket. It holds all of the soap, shampoo, bug repelant, sun screen, etc. At shower time, you can bring the whole bucket to the shower (gives you a place to sit if you are waiting in line) or we also have a net beach bag that you can pick out what you need and even carry your towel, and clothes in. We do still have some stuff in zip lock bags in the bucket, and it is sometimes annoying when people put the bottles back without drying them off. But all in all it keep things organized. We generally camp with a bunch of people and that way they know where to find that sort of stuff. Usually each family has their own bucket.

RE: PUP Security

I can't imagine our grandson going outside without us, he always comes to wake us up, or always has. Last weekend was the first time we locked our pup. Grandson had been playing with a little neighbor boy and he was really interested in what was in our camper. We were all going into town, so decided to lock it mainly to keep him out, he wasn't a bad kid, just curious, and only 6 so probably not too sure about social right and wrong, so we just locked up and everything was fine. I agree, I wouldn't stay in a campground that I felt I had to lock up to keep bad people out. Make memories...preferably Happy ones

RE: Hobo Dinner

Oh my, what a bummer about the foil bags, they were awsome. I think I still have one in the camping gear, so will keep it for special occasion. I like to make campfire potatoes in them. Slice potatoes and chop some onions, put in a little butter and salt and pepper and close it up (oh, spray Pam on inside of bag first) put it on grill or in coals and cook like the Hobo stew, then just before it is done, open and sprinkle with cheese. The bags make it so easy, but I suppose you can make just a foil package?? Make memories Julie

RE: Breakfast menu's

We enjoy the pie iron cooking, and my daughter originated a stuffed french toast for them. She uses Texas toast, and spreads the inside with cream cheese and frozen (thawed) strawberries and then dips the sandwich in egg/milk mixture and put into a well greased pie iron and cook over the fire. They are delicious. Make Memories... Julie

We survived!!!

Hi all, just thought I would pop in and let you know we survived the camp out with 9 teenagers and 3 preschoolers and the birthday party at the park. It really went quite smoothly. The girls in one tent, the boys in another and the little ones in the camper with us. Our daughter (the Mom of 3 of them) slept in a tent between the teenagers. I was surprised how little that many kids ate...or at least real food, it seems like the junk food flowed freely. I am not sure what possessed me to do this, but am glad it went better than I feared. I hope the kids will have good memories of it for years to come. Already had one ask if we were going to do this again next year. LOL

RE: Looking for 7 Days Menu - Any Ideas?

This is a wonderful thread. This weekend, we are taking...ummm 10 teenagers camping, then on Saturday, our grandson will have his 5th birthday, so he has invited 8 5 y/o's for a party (they won't be camping, will just be there for 2 hours) And we have been planning this for months. The teens are our two oldest grandkids and 4 friends each (5 boys, 5 girls) we will have the boys in one tent, the girls in another with our adult daughter in small tent between. My brother and SIL will be at one end and us at the other end (we have 3 campsites) And the little guy and our two other grandkids (2 & 4) will be with us in the pop up. Yes, I know, what were we THINKING? Anyway, because we are feeding so many different people, we have focused on "make your own" and just bringing ingredients. Such as: pie iron meals, zip lock omlettes and nachos. That way we can make ahead alot of the ingredients and everyone can add just what they like. We will make salads and snacks to go along with these meals. Probably eat sandwiches for lunches. The birthday party will require a quick trip to Dairy Queen for an ice cream cake. (We are in a state park just about 20 miles from home, 10 miles from town where we work.) Anyway, keep us in your prayers, this will definately be a memory making weekend, hopefully good memories. Julie
